Growing up in a family of scholars, entrepreneurs and artists, Maarten was inspired by music, intellect and craftmanship from an early age.
His training as a violinmaker finds its roots at the ‘Royal Conservatory of Ghent, Belgium’. At the age of 21 Maarten moved to Poznan, a city in Poland where the violin has a long-standing history. He was trained under the supervision of Marcin Krupa at the ‘Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music’.
While finishing his master degree, Maarten travelled extensively through Europe expending his knowledge through masterclasses, internships and competitions. He graduated with distinction, receiving an honorary bequest from the ‘Royal Conservatory of Ghent’.
A new chapter started when he moved to a small village in Germany, called Ringschnait. In this charming village Maarten worked closely alongside multiple gold medal winner Ulrich Hinsberger and his wife Dagmar. A close connection and friendship were formed between Maarten and the inspiring Hinsberger Family during those following years.
After 10 years of training in violinmaking, he established his own workshop in Ghent specializing in the new making of fine violins and violas.
By attending the renowned summer workshop in Oberlin (USA), Maarten keeps expanding his knowledge while working closely with some of the world’s finest makers.
He is sharing his skill and experience while teaching the next generation of violinmakers at ILSA (International Lutherie School of Antwerp).
Maarten is a member of the VSA (Violin Society of America) and the BVBM (Belgian Violin- & Bow Making Association).
His work has been showcased at the Cuvée Darling exhibition in Köln (Germany) and EKHO exhibition in Brussels (Belgium).
